Oil and gas sector drives demand for training courses at AdeKUS

The Anton de Kom University of Suriname (AdeKUS) observes a clear shift in study choices due to the growth of the energy sector in Suriname. This became evident during a conversation with the institution at the Suriname Energy, Oil & Gas Summit & Exhibition (SEOGS) 2026. The organization is also participating in the event as an Endorsing Partner. During SEOGS 2026, AdeKUS emphasizes the importance of science and knowledge development in supporting the growing energy and oil sector and the sustainable development of Suriname.
“During SEOGS, we notice from visitors’ questions that there is a great deal of interest in our degree programs,” says Ranoe Amrith, Head of Communications at AdeKUS. “Economics, Business Administration, and Geosciences, in particular, are attracting a lot of interest. Due to developments in the oil and gas sector, we are also seeing an increasing demand for technical degree programs. Additionally, interest is growing in courses and masterclasses, which are now offered by various faculties.”
During the event, the university will engage in dialogue with students, professionals, policymakers, companies, and other stakeholders regarding the opportunities and challenges within this dynamic sector. According to Amrith, engagement with the business community has increased significantly in recent years. Whereas the focus used to be primarily on theory, there is now more room for practice-oriented education and collaboration with the professional field.
“A major change is underway. We now have much stronger connections with the business community. We must supply highly educated personnel to companies.”
The so-called ‘knowledge flight’ remains a challenge. Graduates are increasingly given the opportunity to study or work abroad.
For scholarships, we apply rules requiring students to work in Suriname for several years after graduation. However, students may make other choices. With the oil and gas developments, we hope that many will still choose to stay in Suriname and build their careers here. At the same time, companies such as Kersten Group are also contributing to the university with scholarships. In this way, we are strengthening the capacity of our people together. We now have a long list of companies with which we collaborate.”
On August 1, the university is organizing an open day where information will be provided regarding career opportunities in the oil and gas sector. “We also involve the business community in this, so that they can indicate what is possible within their organizations. This way, students have a better understanding of which study programs align with specific positions. For the time being, we are able to keep up well with the demand for highly educated managers,” says Amrith.
